About the Mountaineers
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over UNC Asheville at home last Thursday for the season opener. The Mountaineers dominated ball possession for a majority of the contest and got on the board when Kirsten Seeley tallied a score in the 23rd minute of the first period, while Stephanie Barbosa earned the assist for her first collegiate point. Addie Cooper's first career goal in the 34th minute thanks to an assist from Skyler Walk and Sarah Widderich to give the Black and Gold a 2-0 edge going into the break. Hayley Boyles got in on the action to score in the 14th minute of the second period as she found the top-left corner of the net after Widderich found the junior for her second helper of the evening.
Newcomers weighed in on the action against UNC Asheville to make their debut. Stephanie Barbosa earned the assist for her first collegiate assist off Seeley's score. In addition, a freshmen driven second score in the first period by Addie Cooper with the help of Skyler Walk and Sarah Widderich. Widderich tallied a second assist in the second period, putting the Mountaineers 3-0 over the Bulldogs.
Kerry Eagleston returns as a key starter between the posts for the Apps defense. Last season, Eagleston tallied 67 saves and six clean sheets. Following last Thursday's contest against UNC Asheville, Eagleston is now three shutouts away from tying Emma White (2006-09) for fourth, and three saves away from tying Megan Roberson (2012-15) for sixth all-time in program history.
In the last 10 years, the Mountaineers are 5-5 in road openers, with a two game win streak.
"We grew a lot as a program, going into this year, I think we have that solid core back," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "I think that we've added a lot of talented players, and just really excited about the direction that we're headed."
Scouting Winthrop
Winthrop is 1-0, coming off its season opener against Alabama State in overtime. The Eagles went 2-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the conference last season. Winthrop returns, Laurin Uptegrove, who led the team in scoring with two goals, along with key starters Bailey Fudala and Alexandra Perez.
Series History
App State is 3-2-1 against Winthrop in the last six matchups. In the most recent contest in 2010, the Mountaineers took the 2-0 advantage until giving up a goal to Winthrop with less than 10 minutes left in the contest. The Mountaineers outshot Winthrop, 9-8, but had the shortcoming in corner kicks, 3-2.
