LINCOLN, Neb. — At the U23 Nationals (freestyle), App State's
Jonathan Millner made the final 12 in the 70 kg division after he reached the quarterfinal round with a 3-0 start, and
Caleb Smith was one of the final 16 wrestlers in the 57 kg division thanks to a 2-1 record Friday.
Competing on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Millner posted Friday wins by scores of 16-6 (Round of 64), 11-7 (Round of 32) and 10-2 (Round of 16). A 10-0 loss to Brayton Lee (also a 2021 NCAA All-American at 149 pounds, from Minnesota) allowed Lee to advance to the semifinals.
Smith, who also had a first-round bye, won 10-0 and followed a loss with a 3-1 win.
Millner lost 10-9 to Doug Zapf on Saturday, and Smith lost 5-2 to Sheldon Seymour.
Michael Burchell (125 kg),
Anthony Brito (65 kg) and
Barrett Blakely (86 kg) all went 2-2 on Friday, while
Ethan Oakley (61 kg) won one match.
Sean Carter was also one of seven entries who are currently part of App State's wrestling program.
