Women's Tennis Starts Sun Belt Tournament With Texas State

BOONE, N.C. - No. 4E App State women's tennis will face No. 5W Texas State in the Opening Round of the Sun Belt Championships in Peachtree City, Ga. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on Tennis-Ticker.

The Apps dealt Davidson a 4-3 loss in the regular-season finale after María José Zacarias' three-set victory against her counterpart as the No. 1 in the lineup. Helena Jansen and Sandra Anglesjö also earned singles wins, while the duos of Ksenia Aleshina/Zacarias and Anglesjö/Jansen earned the doubles points with their wins. 

Season Recap
App State finished 6-13 in head coach Ashleigh Antal's first season at the helm. Four of the Apps' victories came in league play, with those wins coming against Georgia State (2x), Georgia Southern and Troy. 

Sun Belt Tournament History
App State is 1-5 all-time in the Sun Belt Tournament, with its lone win coming against the Bobcats in 2019. All five of the Mountaineers' losses in the postseason were a score of 4-3.

Out of the 14 opponents, 10 have a winning record and four are currently ranked in the top 55 in the country, including three teams (North Carolina - 1st, NC State - 6th, Duke - 14th) who are in the top 14. 

Double Trouble
The two doubles teams of Aleshina/Zacarias and Anglesjö/Jansen are both 10-3 on the season, while both tandems' 7-2 conference record leads the Sun Belt. Both pairs are a combined 20-6 on the season. 

Riding with Momentum
In her first season as the No. 1 in the lineup, Zacarias is 7-7 with a four-match win streak going into Thursday. She is 4-2 in league action, while the four wins are third among No. 1's. 

Scouting Texas State
Texas State is 5-12 on the season with a 0-7 record in Sun Belt competition. Hanah Kvapilova leads the team with a 13-2 mark in singles, while 12 of her wins came as the No. 1 in the lineup. R. Israel-Lewis/Hana Kvapilova's 8-3 record leads the team in doubles. The Bobcats head into the contest with a six-match losing skid.

The winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face the top seed from the West Division in UTA on Friday at 3 p.m. (ET).
