ROME, Ga. — The App State tennis team fell to Troy 4-3 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Women's Tennis Championship.
What Happened
The second-seeded Mountaineers (17-6, 9-2 SBC) conceded the doubles point to start the day, dropping matches on courts one and two. Despite a 6-2 win by
Olwyn Ryan-Bovey and
Alexi Cleveland on court three, App State entered singles play trailing 1-0.
In singles, the Mountaineers lost on courts three and four, falling behind 3-0. A gritty three-set win by
Naledi Manyube at No. 2, after dropping the opening set, put App State on the board.
Ruby Broadbent followed with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory at No. 6 to close the gap.
Savannah Dada-Mascoll then evened the match at 3-3 with an impressive straight-set win. Down 4-0 in the first set, she rallied to take seven of the next eight games for a 7-5 win. She then held off a late push to claim the second set, 6-3.
With the match tied, it all came down to Cleveland on court five. After cruising to a 6-0 win in the first set, her opponent responded with a 6-3 victory to force a third set. Despite her efforts, Cleveland dropped the final set, 6-2, as Troy secured the win and advanced.
