The Mountaineers have seven total games scheduled this season against ACC schools (home-home with both Wake Forest and NC State, plus a late-season series at Miami). The Demon Deacons are scheduled to play a midweek game at App State on April 13.
Last season, in the only meeting, head coach
Kermit Smith notched his first win over a ranked Power Five opponent when App State beat No. 24 Wake Forest 11-9 in Winston-Salem on Feb. 26. The Mountaineers trailed 9-8 entering the ninth inning, but
Andrew Greckel hit a tiebreaking two-run homer and closer
Jack Hartman got the final five outs to earn the win. Hartman was a fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020, and Greckel is currently sidelined by an injury.
Robbie Young has 12 hits over the last 10 games, including a homer in the 3-1 win Sunday, and
Bailey Welch is 9-for-19 (.474) with nine runs scored over the last eight games. In six straight starts, with the first five coming at DH,
Peyton Idol is 7-for-21 (.333) with six runs scored and seven RBIs.
Freshman right-hander
Ben Peterson has started each of the last two midweek games for App State. Peterson earned the win on a "staff day" against North Carolina A&T on March 16 by throwing two scoreless innings before exiting with a 5-0 lead, and he took the loss against Charlotte to open Kannapolis' new MiLB stadium last week.
Wake Forest is expected to start right-hander Reed Mascolo, who didn't allow any runs in short appearances as the midweek starter against Charlotte (2.1 innings on March 16) and Elon (3.0 innings on March 23). He was a freshman last season at Seton Hall.
The Demon Deacons' 3-5 record against ranked ACC opponents this season includes back-to-back wins Saturday and Sunday at No. 17 Florida State.
