EDINBORO, Pa. — Caleb Smith and
Tyler Kellison both posted 3-0 records in dramatic fashion at 133 pounds as four App State wrestlers had unbeaten showings in a round-robin event Sunday with host Edinboro and Buffalo.
Facing wrestlers from two MAC programs, the other unbeaten marks were 2-0 records belonging to
Barrett Blakely (184) and
Tommy Askey (157).
Sean Carter scored double-figure points in two victories before finishing 2-1 at 133, while
Tristan Pugh (149),
Heath Gonyer (141) and
Brett Mordecai (165) won one match apiece.
Kellison sandwiched a second-period pin and a 15-4 major decision around a last-second, 8-3 decision against Buffalo's Jimmy Ryan. With the score tied 2-2 entering the third period, Ryan nearly rode out the entire period from the top position, meaning he would have won 3-2 with the bonus point for riding time and no escape from Kellison. Instead, following a restart in the middle of the mat with 12.9 seconds left and Kellison still on bottom, he quickly tumbled into position to execute a go-ahead, two-point reversal with six seconds left and then added a four-point near fall as time expired.
Smith enjoyed his share of drama following an 11-3 major decision to begin his day. He won a 5-3 decision with a Tiebreaker-2 takedown of Edinboro's Richie Markulics and a 14-12 decision with a Tiebreaker-1 takedown of Buffalo's Tommy Maddox.
After a scoreless TB-1 period between Markulics and Smith, Markulics started the first 30-second Tiebreaker-2 period with a quick escape, and Smith had an even faster one to open the second Tiebreaker-2 period — the matching periods give each wrestler a chance to escape while still rewarding takedowns. Smith delivered one with time running out in the second 30-second period.
Smith and Maddox were tied at 12-all to end regulation of their match, but Smith improved to 10-1 this season by producing a takedown halfway through the Tiebreaker-1 period.
Blakely's two matches against Edinboro's Ethan Ducca were tight, ending with 7-5 and 4-3 decisions, while Askey followed a first-period pin of Edinboro's Alex Garcia with an 18-7 major decision against Garcia.
Mordecai's win came from a 10-0 shutout, Gonyer won an 8-4 decision and Pugh claimed a 12-8 decision.
The 2020-21 wrestling season is presented by Hungry Howies and Penn Station.
The postseason begins later this month with the SoCon Championships on Feb. 28 at the Holmes Center in Boone, and the NCAA Championships are scheduled to begin March 18 in St. Louis.
