CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Facing an unbeaten North Carolina Tar Heel team on its home court, the App State women's basketball team fell 89-44 Wednesday night at Carmichael Arena.
Both teams played tough defense early, but the shots wouldn't fall for the Mountaineers (2-2). App State missed 28 of its 30 shots in the first half and trailed 40-7 at the break.
The offense clicked better in the second half, when the Mountaineers scored 37 points.
The ball started to find the basket more frequently in the third quarter, specifically from a pair of 3-pointers by
Alexia Allesch and a jumper and layup by
Janay Sanders.
Breanna Locke drained a triple right at the buzzer to end the frame, bringing the score to 66-26.
Three-pointers by
Dane Bertolina and
Faith Alston early in the fourth quarter helped keep the offensive rhythm going.
On the night, Alston led App State with seven points, followed by Allesch, Bertolina and Locke with six apiece.
Allesch, a senior transfer from Seton Hall playing in her first game with App State, added eight rebounds and blocked three shots in 18 minutes of strong play in the post.
The Tar Heels (3-0) were led by Deja Kelly's 18 points and 16 from Anya Poole.
App State returns home for a Monday night matchup with Winston-Salem State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., televised by ESPN+.
