Freshmen Lead Way as Women's Golf Wraps Up Fall Slate

ARDEN, N.C. — A pair of freshmen led App State Women's Golf at the French Broad Collegiate Invitational, with Layla Meric and Mary-Sears Brown posting the Mountaineers' best scores in both the final round and overall.
 
Meric had a 5-over 76 in the final round and Brown carded a final-round 77 as they placed 42nd overall in a tournament that included 13 teams. Hannah Wang shot a final-round 78 and placed 46th overall.
 
In the team standings, the Mountaineers were 12th. Meric had a pair of 76s in the 54-hole event, and Brown recorded a pair of 77s. Kayla Ward opened the tournament with an 82, and a third freshman, Jacquelyn Taylor, posted her best round Tuesday in what was her first college tournament.
 
The trip to Arden wrapped up App State's fall schedule. The Mountaineers' spring schedule begins Feb. 7 in Panama City, Fla.
