Boone, N.C. – Appalachian State held its 2019 spring commencement ceremonies May 10-11, and 61 current and former Mountaineer student-athletes received a bachelor's or master's degree from the university.
Every App State sport boasted a graduate over the weekend, including the Sun Belt champion football and women's cross country teams, as well as the Sun Belt regular-season champion women's tennis team and the Southern Conference regular-season champion wrestling team.
Many graduates were recognized for their hard work and dedication at the annual Senior Dinner on Thursday night, where they celebrated with their coaches, academic advisors, Director of Athletics
Doug Gillin and other members of the App State athletics administration.
Women's cross country, winner of the 2019 APPSY for Team Academic Excellence, graduates six seniors,
Katelyn Butler,
Emily Fedders,
Phylissa Greeley,
Sarah Hoffert,
Erin Jameson, and
Elisa Sargent.
The App State softball and track & field teams, who were both out of town last weekend at their respective Sun Belt Championships, held their own graduation ceremonies. The five graduating seniors of the Mountaineer baseball team were recognized prior to their series finale against South Alabama on Sunday.
Since its 2014-15 transition to the Sun Belt Conference for all but two sports (wrestling and field hockey), App State has paced the league in academic performance among its student-athletes. In the 2016-17 academic year, App State won the Sun Belt Institutional Graduation Rate Award for the second time in three years. The Mountaineers totaled 95 student-athletes on the Commissioner's List (3.5+ GPA) and 115 on the Academic Honor Roll (3.0-3.49 GPA) after the 2017-18 academic year. This month, App State led all Sun Belt schools with a school record 14 teams that achieved a perfect 1,000 single-year APR score.
