Women's Tennis Continues Home Success with Win Over Georgia State

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (13-5, 7-1 SBC) registered its third Sun Belt sweep of the season with a 5-2 victory over Georgia State (7-12, 3-5 SBC) on Sunday afternoon at Deer Valley Racquet Club.

The 13 victories are the most since the 2012-13 campaign, while the Apps are in first in the league going into the final weekend of the regular season.

"We're really proud of the way the team battled today," head coach Blake Mosley said. "We played well in doubles and then was able to win some tight matches in singles play. We had a great week of practice going into our matches. When a team practices well and stays focused, that translates to success on game days."

Coming down to singles play, the Mountaineers claimed the final two points after GSU had tied up the contest, 2-2. Clinching the contest was Jeannez Daniel, who was the lone match that went to straight sets thanks to her 6-3, 6-4 decision against Lara Vovk. The senior is now on a five-match win streak, has reached 10 victories on the season and is 8-2 over her last 10 contests.

Kate Earnhardt provided a timely three-set win just after GSU won the first two finished singles wins in three sets. The redshirt-freshman claimed the first frame, 6-4, before Daniela Ramirez forced a match-deciding stanza. In the final set, Earnhardt downed her opponent 6-1.

Rebecca Morse ended the day on a high note for the Black and Gold as she battled to a three-set tiebreaking victory, improving to 5-2 over her last seven matches. Morse fell in the set 7-5 to Anastasia Grosheva before winning the second set in a 7-6 (9-7) tiebreaker and then downing Grosheva 1-0 (10-8). The visitors forfeited on the Court. No. 6, which gave Appalachian a 2-0 advantage after the Mountaineers won the doubles point.

App State started off on the right foot in doubles with the 1-0 advantage going into singles. Heidi Swope and María José Zacarias clinched the doubles point following their 6-2 triumph against Daniela Ramirez/Eva Chivu.

Teodora Sevo and Sandra Anglesjö nearly had their 10th victory of the season but their contest ended in a 5-3 unfinished match against Damira Muminovic/Lara Vovk. Appalachian earned the first doubles match with Georgia State forfeiting Court No. 3.

App State is down to the final weekend of the regular season with both matches taking place at home. Appalachian will host UTA on Friday at 10 a.m. before facing Texas State on Sunday at 10 a.m. for Senior Day.
