Dada-Mascoll’s 100th Singles Victory Leads Tennis Past Georgia State

ATLANTA — The App State tennis team closed out the regular season Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Georgia State, marking its fifth straight win. The match was highlighted by No. 12 Savannah Dada-Mascoll, who clinched the dual with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 comeback over Maria Paredes, a two-time All-Sun Belt Second Team selection. The victory marked Dada-Mascoll's 20th consecutive singles win this season and the 100th overall of her career, including fall contests. In storybook fashion, she trailed 2-1 in the deciding set before taking five of the next six games to secure the win.

Alexi Cleveland earned a big win at No. 6, winning in straight sets to secure her third straight win. Allegra Hodson snapped a two-match losing streak, recording her second bagel of the season in a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Taya Powell put the Mountaineers in striking distance with a straight-set win at No. 3, moving to 3-3 at that position.

How It Happened
The Mountaineers opened the dual by conceding the doubles point to Georgia State (5-13) with losses at Nos. 1 and 2. Sreenidhi Balaji and Hodson secured their second consecutive win, moving to 9-6 on the season, a team best in doubles.

Trailing 1-0 heading into singles and needing four wins to take the match, Cleveland tied the score with a dominant performance at No. 6, winning 6-1, 6-3. Hodson finished shortly after at No. 4 to put App State ahead.

Powell avoided a third set, winning 6-3, 6-3 to push the lead to 3-1. With three matches remaining, Broadbent and Dada-Mascoll each split their first two sets. After dropping her opener, Broadbent bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second to force a third. Despite dropping her first set since Feb. 28, Dada-Mascoll finished her comeback first, rallying in the third to clinch the overall victory.

Up Next
The Mountaineers head to Rome, Ga. for the Sun Belt Championship beginning Wednesday. Because the Sun Belt does not use a standard conference win-loss slate for women's tennis, seeding will be determined by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) RPI rankings, which will be announced Monday at 7 p.m.
