Women's Tennis Defeats NCCU, Falls to No. 11 NC State

Box Score 1 BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (6-4) split a pair of matches on Friday to end the week. The Mountaineers convincingly defeated North Carolina Central, 6-1, in the morning before suffering a 7-0 decision to No. 11 North Carolina State in the evening. 

The Mountaineers ended the week with a 3-2 mark and is now 4-3 on the road this season. 

After Friday, Heidi Swope is 8-2 in singles play while the six other Mountaineers boast at least three singles victories. Sandra Anglesjö and Teodora Sevo are a team-best 6-1 in doubles. 

App State 6, North Carolina Central 1 
App State was unblemished in doubles play with all three tandems capturing wins. 

Swope and María José Zacarias won their match over Frida Cnossen/Hannah Gaines, 6-1, while Sevo/Anglesjö captured a 6-0 sweep over Maru Berghaus/Ivana Dragovic. Completing the 3-0 doubles record was Kate Earnhardt/Jeannez Daniel won their second straight match with a 6-3 win over Sofia Miller/Emily Pena. 

The momentum continued in singles, as the Black and Gold came away with five of the six singles match going to straight sets. Jeannez Daniel picked up a win over Gaines, 6-2, 6-3. Zacarias won her battle over Berghaus in sweeping fashion, 6-3, 6-2. 

Rebecca Morse topped Miller in her match, 6-1, 6-1, while Hope won her eighth match of the campaign against Polina Sakharova, 6-3, 6-2. 

Anglesjö kept up her play as the No. 6 in the lineup against Dragovic, 6-1, 6-1. 


No. 11 NC State 7, App State 0
Appalachian faced another top ACC program, as the Wolfpack were the second-nationally ranked program from the conference the Mountaineers have faced (then-No. 2 North Carolina.)

App State couldn't get any rhythm going against NC State in doubles play. The Apps had won the last two doubles point prior to Friday's match. 

In doubles, Swope and Zacarias gave Anna Rogers/Alana Smith, the No. 12 doubles partner in the country, all they could handle. The App pairing only lost by two points to their counterpart. 

NC State claimed the next doubles contest to go into singles with a 1-0 edge. App was unable to get any momentum going, as NCSU claimed the six singles matches to pull away for the win. 

App State will face Coastal Carolina on the road to open Sun Belt play. First serve is set for 10 a.m. in Conway on Wednesday, March 13.
