BOONE, N.C. — App State's
Jonathan Millner has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week following his second straight individual title to open the 2019-20 season.
A sophomore from Greensboro, Millner improved to 9-0 on the season as he took first place with a 5-0 mark in the 149-pound division of the Wolfpack Open in Raleigh. That performance followed a title run at the Mountaineer Invitational in Boone the previous weekend.
Millner rallied for a comeback win in the championship round for the second straight weekend, as he posted a 16-8 major decision against Virginia Tech's Bryce Adonian after falling behind 6-0 in the first 33 seconds and trailing 8-4 early in the second period. He scored the last 12 points, using an escape, a takedown and a pair of two-point near falls to lead 11-8 at the end of the second period.
Millner claimed a 6-2 decision against NC State's AJ Leitten, who started for the No. 9 Wolfpack in its closest dual of the season, before posting a 4-2 semifinal decision against the Wolfpack's Matt Grippi. Leitten and Grippi are a combined 20-4 in matches not against Millner, who has improved his career record to 30-9.
The 2019-20 wrestling season is presented by Hungry Howies, and App State wrestlers return to action Sunday at the Keystone Classic in Philadelphia.
