BOONE, N.C. – App State freshman
Hannah Wang surged to a runner-up individual finish and headlined a third-place team result for the Mountaineers at their fall home tournament, the Hound Ears Intercollegiate, on Tuesday.
Wang carded the best round of her young collegiate career with a 1-under-par 71 in Tuesday's second and final round to vault from seventh to second place on the individual leaderboard. She finished at 3-over (76, 71 – 147), three strokes behind individual medalist Linnea Hofgren of Gardner-Webb.
William & Mary repeated as team champion in the second annual tournament, carding a two-round score of 612 (+36). Gardner-Webb was second at 619 (+43), followed by App State at 622 (+46), Western Carolina at 626 (+50), Wofford at 627 (+51) and Longwood at 639 (+63).
"Ultimately, we're chasing team success," said Mountaineer head coach
Heather Brown. "Having a top-two individual is always nice, but going into the final round with the team lead and finishing third was not what we're looking for. Hannah's playing certainly kept us in the hunt for a while, but we needed to put forth a better effort as a team.
The other scorers for App State included
Mogie Adamchik in a tie for 10th place (+12),
Abby Bolt in a tie for 19th (+16),
Sarah Hardin in 26th (+20) and
C.C. Ganim in a tie for 27th (+21). Competing as individuals,
Kayla Ward tied for 12th (+13) and
Meghan Mitchell tied for 31st (+25).
"So far this season we've had several individual successes and breakthroughs, but we haven't been able to put it all together in one place," Brown added. "We will be looking to do that as we head into our last fall event."
App State concludes its fall season with a trip to Spartanburg, S.C., for the Oct. 28-29 Terrier Intercollegiate, hosted by Wofford.
