RICHMOND, Va. - App State men's tennis showed improvement in the second fall tournament of the season at the River City Tennis Open finishing with 21 victories over the three-day event.
Featuring 17 other schools including Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, the Mountaineers improved their win total by 10 matches from their first fall event at the College of Charleston Invite (11 victories).
Appalachian won 15 singles contests through four singles flights. Four different Mountaineers won at least three matches in
Milo Bargeron,
Blake Carter,
Campbell Stone, and
Karan Srivastava.
Bargeron earned a spot in the C Singles Flight title match with three, three-set wins in the first two rounds. The senior fell in a valiant effort to VCU's Timo Zgraggen in three frames. Carter finished third in the F Singles bracket while Stone notched a fifth-place finish in the same flight.
Srivastava won the last three matches after a first-round loss en route to a consolation championship against Panos Nearchou of Old Dominion in straight sets.
Alex Pavkovich picked up a pair of wins in the E Singles Flight and finished fourth, and
Alessio Azzalini chipped in with a victory.
In doubles, Stone and Azzalini earned themselves a flight championship in the E Doubles Flight by going 3-0 with wins over Virginia, ODU and capped off the run with a 6-4 victory over Agustine Tamagnone/Nelson Stafford of ECU.
Earning an appearance in the C Doubles Flight final was Pavkovich and Bargeron, who won back-to-back matches against William and Mary and the Rams. The duo fell in the championship to Klein Evans Campbell Erwin of Richmond.
The two tandems recorded five of the six doubles wins on the weekend. Carter and Srivastava collected a win in the F flight against George Mason.
Appalachian will look to build off the successful weekend when it takes part in the ITA Regionals hosted by Duke in Cary, N.C. from Oct. 17-22.
