BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State's pursuit of another Southern Conference title begins Tuesday night with a league-opening home dual meet against Gardner-Webb.

Appalachian State, which has won three straight SoCon regular season championships, begins league competition after going through a difficult nonconference schedule and having three wrestlers medal at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Randall Diabe (197 pounds) and
Alan Clothier (184) won seventh-place matches, and
Matt Zovistoski finished eighth at 149 pounds.
Diabe leads the Mountaineers with a 6-1 dual record, and heavyweight
Cary Miller is 4-3. He has a team-high six pins, followed by four from
Irvin Enriquez, and Clothier is even with Diabe with five wins by major decision.
Gardner-Webb, which could have open spots at two of the 10 weight classes, is led by reigning SoCon champion Tyler Marinelli. After winning the title at 157 pounds last season, he has moved up to 165 pounds recently and was 11-0 on the season before dropping his final two matches at the Southern Scuffle. His 4-0 dual record included three early appearances at 157 pounds, but he'll likely face App State senior
Michael Elliott at 165 pounds Tuesday.
Before the Gardner-Webb match, Avery County will face Cave Spring (Va.) in a high school dual that begins at 5:30 p.m.
