Chong Earns National Academic Honor

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State's Melany Chong has been chosen as a Women's Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar for 2017-18.

Chong, a rising junior from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, was eligible for the honor by having a GPA of 3.50 or higher. A sustainable technology major, she was a member of the Dean's list and the Academic Honor Roll in the fall of 2016, spring of 2017, fall of 2017 and spring of 2018. She's in position to repeat as a member of the Commissioner's List.

Chong is moving forward from a sophomore year in which she was the individual medalist at the Low Country Intercollegiate, placed second at the Dayton Hilton Head Invitational and finished in the top 10 at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.

Chong will compete at the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur in Kingston Springs, Tenn., early next month. The event will be held at the Golf Club of Tennessee from Aug. 6-12, and she earned a spot in the field by claiming one of three available spots at a Toronto qualifier. Chong tied one other golfer for second place by going 2-under on the back nine and shooting a 1-over 73 in the 36-person field.

The championship will be broadcast on FS1.
