Boone, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's tennis (4-4) will play a pair of matches this weekend, starting with its home-opening match against UNC Asheville (2-1) on Friday at 2 p.m. and a road match at Western Carolina (2-2) on Saturday. Serve is set for 2 p.m.
The Mountaineers are coming off another solid 1-1 weekend where they bounced back from a 6-1 defeat to NC State with a commanding 6-1 victory over Campbell. Appalachian has improved its start from last season, where it did not pick up its fourth win until March 4. App will have a chance to match last season's win total on Friday.
App picked up the doubles point in both matches in Raleigh, cruising to a 4-1 doubles record between the two contests.
Against the Fighting Camels, the Mountaineers' top four seeds clinched straight-set victories in singles competition. Ace
María José Zacarias has now won three of her previous four matches.
App has played well in doubles action with a 12-8 record. The pairing of
Teodora Sevo and
Melissa Machado notched two more victories, elevating its impressive team-best record to 6-2.
Scouting UNC Asheville
UNC Asheville has only played in three matches this season. The Bulldogs are 2-1 on the season, winning its first two matches against Mars Hill and USC Upstate. Asheville's lone defeat was a 7-0 sweep at Davidson. The Bulldogs are 9-9 in singles and 5-2 in doubles. Doubles pairings Hannah Francisco and Kylee Shipley and Christin Louw and Lauren Watson-Steele are 3-0 and 2-0 respectively.
Scouting Western Carolina
Western Carolina is 2-2 this season and is coming off a 4-3 home loss to Kennesaw State. The Catamounts' two victories came in in a 6-1 win over North Carolina A&T and a 7-0 triumph over North Carolina Central. In singles competition, Western Carolina is 16-8 overall with Jordan Strickland and Carli Deehr posting perfect 4-0 and 3-0 marks respectively. The Catamounts are also 7-4 in doubles with the pairing of Jordyn King and Lauren McCall sitting at 3-0.
Appalachian will return to action for back-to-back home matches against College of Charleston on Feb. 25 at 2 p.m. followed by a March 2 affair against Radford at 2 p.m.
