Mountaineers Set Sights on Wichita State on Second Day of Charleston Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Appalachian State men's basketball will take on Wichita State on Friday at the Charleston Classic. Tip is set for 4:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

THE SERIES
  • This is the third all-time meeting between the two schools, with the series knotted at 1-1.
  • App State captured the first contest between the two schools 60-58 in overtime in Wichita in the 2006-07 season.
  • Wichita State won the second matchup in 2007-08 by a 62-53 score in Boone.
LAST TIME OUT
  • Appalachian State fell in the First Round of the Charleston Classic by a 92-70 score to No. 23-ranked Purdue.
  • Justin Forrest had a team-high 14 points, going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line, and four rebounds.
  • Off the bench, Joseph Battle finished with 11 points and Adrian Delph tallied 10.
  • App State trimmed an 18-point first half deficit down to 11 points on back-to-back threes from Breki Gylfason. Purdue took a 46-32 lead into the half and broke the game open in the second half with a 16-4 run.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • App State is 1-2 on the season.
  • Three Mountaineers are averaging double figure scoring in Justin Forrest (17.0), Ronshad Shabazz (14.0) and Isaac Johnson (10.7).
  • Isaac Johnson leads the team in rebounding (8.3 rpg), while Adrian Delph is shooting a team-best 80.0 percent (12-of-15) from the field.
  • Tyrell Johnson is leaving his mark in the career blocks category. Johnson currently sits in a tie for eighth place on the all-time list with 95 and is just one block shy of passing Chris McFarland for sole possession of eighth place and two blocks shy of passing Isaac Butts for seventh.
SCOUTING THE SHOCKERS
  • Wichita State fell to Davidson at the Charleston Classic by a 57-53 score on Thursday night.
  • Markis McDuffie paced the Shockers with 18 points and six rebounds. Samajae Haynes-Jones added 15 points and Erik Stevenson chipped in with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench.
  • McDuffie leads the team in scoring at 19.3 points, with Haynes-Jones second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.3 points, while leading the team in assists with 17.
  • Jaime Echenique is averaging 6.7 rebounds, which leads the team.
UP NEXT
Appalachian State will close out play at the Charleston Classic on Sunday at 11 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. against either Alabama or Ball State.
