BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer (7-3-3) and Elon (4-7-1) fought to a 0-0 tie in a defensive showdown on Wednesday evening at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
Appalachian earns its sixth shutout of the season, which ties for the most since 2015 and the most since overall since 2012. In addition, App stays unblemished at home with a 3-0-2 mark and has blanked its opponents in four straight home contests.
"We're really proud to pick up our sixth shutout of the year," head coach
Jason O'Keefe said. The team had tremendous effort. I think we lacked some quality in the attacking third and couldn't produce the goal we needed."
Jake Chasteen's sixth clean sheet of the season ties him for the third most shutouts in a season. The senior is two away from tying Danny Free (8;2011) for the single-season mark and three away from setting the program record. Chasteen had four saves, which two timely stops came in the final eight minutes of the contest that kept the scored tied 0-0.
Elon also had an opportunity when following a corner kick, Mikey Thomas' header was right on target for the win but
Brady Gunter was the last line of defense and made a crucial save in the 102nd minute of the game.
Charlie Baird had an opportunity earlier in the second overtime period with a shot on goal, but was stopped by Matthew Jegier.
Both teams in the first two periods mustered just one shot on goal with
Juan Hernandez striking in the first stanza for the contest's only shot on target, while Chasteen stopped Jack Willbye's shot attempt late in the second period.
"We are one step closer to a handful of goals we set at the beginning of the year, keeping an unbeaten home record intact," O'Keefe continued. "There's plenty to build off, and we'll get ready for our next game versus Presbyterian.
Reed Hunnicutt and
Ian Bennett led the team with a pair of shot attempts.
App State will have five days off before hosting Presbyterian next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
