About the Mountaineers
Appalachian State got back on track in its last outing posting the first shutout triumph of the season over Longwood, 1-0.
Reed Hunnicutt became the fifth newcomer of the season and the seventh different Mountaineer to tally a goal early in the first half. The lone goal was all the Mountaineers needed to get back to .500 on the season and match last season's win total at Ted Mackorell.
Jake Chasteen also came up big in the victory as he registered his first-career clean sheet to go along with two saves, including a leaping save that would have tied up the contest late in the process.
Active Chasteen
Following Chasteen's big performance last weekend, the junior is second in the Sun Belt with 30 saves, third in save percentage at .750 and third in goals-against average at 1.38 thus far. The Boone native has posted multiple saves in every match while playing every minute between the frame.
Leaders
Juan Hernandez continues to lead App with two goals while six other Mountaineers have scored this season. Hernandez' two goals and one assist give the freshman a team-best five points, while Hunnicutt is the only student-athlete on the team with at least one goal and multiple assists. HIs four points are good for second on App.
Scouting UNCG (2-4-1)
The Spartans have won their last two matches following a four-match skid that included setbacks against then-No. 19 Coastal Carolina and then-No. 9 North Carolina. Leading the Spartans in goals scored is Matt Mattis, who has notched two scores for the hosts, while Leeroy Maguraushe, Alex Henderson, and Sandro Bradara also have tallied a goal. Jon Milligan is the team's primary goalkeeper where he has played every minute in the net for UNCG. He owns a solid .97 goals against average with three shutouts, two of which have come in the last two matches. His numbers have him in second in GAA in the SoCon and top the conference in shutouts.
Series History
App and UNCG have not played since the 2013 campaign, while the Spartans have captured the last three matchups.
What's Next
The Apps' schedule doesn't get any easier as they head to Durham, N.C. for an in-state matchup against Duke at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
