Women's Tennis Announces Spring Schedule

BOONE, N.C. - Highlighted by three matches against ACC foes, six home matches, and four Sun Belt contests, App State University women's tennis has announced the 2018 spring schedule

Head coach Blake Mosley, who is in his second year with the Mountaineers, put together a formidable schedule for the Black and Gold in preparation for the Sun Belt Championship. With six of nine athletes from last season's squad and four highly skilled newcomers, the Apps are poised for an improved season this spring.

App State will have a tough opening weekend on Jan. 20-21 when it faces UNC Wilmington, ACC foe Clemson and Charleston Southern at the Clemson Duckworth Invite hosted by the Tigers. All three teams boasted winning seasons last year combining for a 45-24 mark including a 17-3 record from Charleston Southern. The Black and Gold will travel five days later to a second ACC opponent in four matches when they face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Appalachian will face Old Dominion (2/3) and Charlotte (2/4) in back-to-back days in Norfolk, Va. as the Monarchs will host both schools that weekend. Following those two matches will be NC State and Campbell on Feb. 10 in Raleigh, N.C., and then six days later the Mountaineers host their first home match of the season against UNC Asheville on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. at Deer Valley or Varsity Courts behind the Athletics Center/Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Mountaineers return on the road one day later when they face Western Carolina on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.

App will host the next two matches on Feb. 25 against College of Charleston and March 2 against Radford to cap off a span of three home matches in four contests. Awaiting Appalachian during spring break will be Savannah State, as the Mountaineers will travel to Savannah, Ga. for a midweek matchup before hosting UAB on March 13. App State will host North Carolina Central on March 17 at 2 p.m. followed by a home contest against UNC Greensboro at 2 p.m. three days later.  The Apps will face their first Sun Belt opponents in Georgia State and Coastal Carolina on March 24-25. The two matches are hosted by the Chanticleers.

App State will return to Boone for an April 2 contest at 2 p.m. before traveling to Atlanta to take on archrival Georgia Southern and Troy on consecutive days (April 7-8). Appalachian and Georgia Southern had two entertaining matches in which both came down to the last contest in singles. The Black and Gold captured the first affair thanks to a second-straight match-winning victory by Heidi Swope. In the second matchup, Georgia Southern edged App in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament.

The Mountaineers will end the season in Johnson City against the Buccaneers of ETSU on April 14.

App will then head to Peachtree City, Ga. to take part in the Sun Belt Championship from April 19-22.
