Mountaineers to Face Western Michigan on Second Day of Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach

CONWAY, S.C. -- Appalachian State men's basketball continues play at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach. The Mountaineers will play at 5 p.m. against Western Michigan. The contest will also be broadcast on ESPNU.

  • This is the first ever meeting between the two schools.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • Appalachian State stands at 2-1 on the season after falling to Iowa State State yesterday 104-98.
  • Ronshad Shabazz scored 32 points for the Mountaineers, including 21 in the first half. His first half scoring output was just three points shy of tying his career-high for points in a half of 24 set last season against Georgia Southern.
  • Justin Forrest also had 32 points in a reserve role. In the second half, he set a Puerto Rico Tip-Off record for points in a half, pouring in 26.
  • On the season, Shabazz is leading the team in scoring at 27.0 ppg. He has scored 24 points or more in each of App State's first three contests.
  • Isaac Johnson is leading the team in rebounding, pulling down 7.3 rpg, with Tyrell Johnson right behind averaging 6.7 rpg. Tyrell Johnson has recorded at least six rebounds in the first three Mountaineer contests.
SCOUTING THE BRONCOS
  • Western Michigan enters with a 1-2 mark on the season after dropping an 81-74 contest to Tulsa.
  • Josh Davis scored a career-high 14 points and matched his career-best with eight rebounds in the loss.
  • Reigning MAC Player of the Year Thomas Wilder leads the Broncos in scoring (19.3 ppg) and assists (5.7 apg). 
  • Davis is also averaging double figures in scoring at 11.3 ppg, while leading the team in rebounding at 6.7 rpg.
NEXT UP
  • App State will take on either South Carolina or UTEP in the final game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach on Sunday. Tip will be at either 11:30 a.m. or 2 p.m. based on Friday's outcome.
