Women's Tennis Concludes ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis finished the ITA Regionals hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

The Mountaineers faced some tough competition with the field including teams from North and South Carolina. Rebecca Morse and Melissa Machado also competed in the five-day tournament. Morse suffered a 6-2, 6-4, setback to UNCW's Xandra Fougner, while Machao would face Alex Lee (Charlotte), falling 6-3, 6-2 in qualifying singles. Taylor Bygrave took on Rachel Rohrbacher of South Carolina. Bygrave fell in the first set, 6-3, but came back to capture the second frame, 6-2, before falling in a valiant effort. 

Teodora Sevo participated in her first-ever ITA Regionals, falling in the first round of qualifying singles to Montana Moore (Elon) in a tough, three-set battle. Sevo came back from one-set deficit to force a third frame before suffering the 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3 decision. Sevo came back in an extra match to pick up a win against her counterpart that represented the Phoenix.

Despite Heidi Swope's setback to the 14th overall seed in Lisa Hofbauer of East Carolina, Swope bounced back in an extra contest to defeat her opponent from Wake Forest.  

Maria José Zacarias competed in her first ITA Regionals as well, taking part in the Main Draw. Zacarias fell to Rohrbacher in straight sets, while later falling to Zenoni of Elon in three sets. 

In doubles play, Bygrave and Morse teamed up to face Corrine Blythe and Alice Taylor, but fell 8-5. Machado and Sevo faced conference foe, Coastal Carolina's Sara Bonder/Somer Dalla Bona. The two opponents went back and forth before Bonder/Dalla Bona captured the match, 8-7 (5). 

App State will conclude the fall season at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Invite in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.
