Ninth Inning Woes Continue Against UALR

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — For the second time in as many days Appalachian State University baseball fell by a walk-off hit versus Sun Belt conference foe University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

The Mountaineers (7-20, 2-9 Sun Belt) took a 3-0 lead into the ninth behind a great pitching performance from senior lefty Jeffrey Springs before the Trojans (9-13, 6-4 Sun Belt) rallied and plated the winning run on Jason Prevatt's bunt.

Appalachian jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with the help of a dropped pop fly by James Gillean with two outs that allowed Brian Bauk to reach first base. Then Matt Brill, Chandler Seagle, and Brandon Burris all hit RBI singles to break the deadlock.

The Appalachian State offense went silent after the second inning and was unable to reach base again until Dillon Dobson was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning.

With a 3-0 lead headed into the bottom of the ninth, Springs was back on the mound. Springs gave up one of his three hits on the day and then walked Klye Kirk before Caleb McCann entered the game to pitch. McCann got one out and then walked Gillean to load the bases.

Robert Whaley made his second appearance of the season in relief of McCann with three men on base. Whaley gave up two RBI singles to even the score at three apiece. With runners on the corners, Prevatt laid a bunt down towards first base that brought the winning run across the plate.

The Mountaineers will try to snap a five-game skid tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the series finale versus UALR.
