Women's Cross Country Finishes in Second

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's cross country finished in second place out of 17 teams at the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday evening thanks to a team score of 70.

"The ladies were once again led by Tristin Van Ord, her first race back in a month," said head coach Michael Curcio. "She felt a little rusty but put in a good effort."

As mentioned above, the Mountaineers were paced by Van Ord in seventh place out of 173 competitors and she was clocked at 21:51.08. Samantha Campanaro was the next to finish for App State and did so in 13th place with a personal-best time of 22:06.35.

Three places later came Brittany Williams in 16th (22:21.46) before Hana Ratcliffe and Dana Cox rounded out the scoring for Appalachian in 22nd and 27th, respectively, with times of 22:31.94 and 22:35.37.

"Hana and Dana are back in the lineup, so it helps to have some experience in the pack," Curcio added. "Freshman Erin Jameson continues to improve and she led the freshmen in their first 6K effort. It was nice to get in a higher caliber meet racing against Richmond."

Jameson finished in 34th place with a time of 22:45.63 and she has been among the top 35 in each of her first four collegiate races.

Curcio continued, "In an effort to use a common start and finish line with the high school state meet course, Wake Forest set up a 6,110-meter women's course and an 8,100-meter men's course. Cross country is really less about time and more about place. It just puts the efforts in better perspective."

Richmond won the event with 53 points and the host Demon Deacons concluded the top three with 86 points.

This event presented good practice for the women as it's the only 6K race they'll compete in before the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 13.

The Mountaineers are off until the first of November when they travel to Hampton, Ga. for the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
