SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's track and field placed third at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on Sunday afternoon.
Jackson Powers finished the competition in fifth-place in the decathalon for the Mountaineers, posting five points for the team.
The Appalachian 4x100 relay team of Antonio Marcano Jr., William Buckley, Clay Allen and Marshall McRae took the SoCon title, placing first with a time of 40.62. McRae, Joshua Hanna, Raphael Rojas and David Riddleberger then led the team in the 4x400 relay, finishing second with a time of 3:15.19.
McRae and Buckley went third and fourth in the 100m dash, posting times of 10.57 and 10.60, respectively, each finding new personal bests. Buckley followed that performance up with a second-place finish in the 200m dash, recording a new personal best time of 21.64.
Rojas notched a third-place finish in the 400m run, adding six points to the team score with a time of 47.96. The time was a new personal record. Kenley Joseph found five points for the Mountaineers when he placed fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.42, a new a personal record.
The Mountaineers were led by Kyle McFoy in the 5,000m run as he placed third with a mark of 15:00.41, gaining six team points.
The throwers gained 23 team points on Sunday as Nathan Milch led the way, taking the shot put title with a throw of 51-10.50, a new personal best. He then placed third in the discus, throwing a distance of 150-7.00, also a personal best.
Appalachian ended the conference meet with two jumpers with titles as Samuel Allen took first-place in the high jump, clearing a height of 6-8.00 and Jamal Tiller took first in the triple jump with a mark of 49-5.00.
Milch, Allen and Tiller were the only Mountaineers to win league titles, helping the Mountaineers to a third-place finish with 165.5 points. Samford won the conference championship with 207 points, followed by Western Carolina in second-place with 204 points. Milch also took home the SoCon Freshman of the Year award.
App State director of track and field John Weaver was also recognized by the Southern Conference on Sunday for his contributions to college track and field. The conference commissioner awarded Weaver for being a liaison from the NCAA to the SoCon for so many years and recognized him for everything he has done for the league.
