STATESBORO, Ga. – Behind 36 top-eight finishes, Appalachian State University women's track and field took home a second-place finish at the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships.
The Mountaineers finished with 159.5 points while league champion Western Carolina finished with 197.5 points to snap Appalachian's streak of two-straight conference titles. Georgia Southern finished a distant third with 112.5 points while Elon (111) and Samford (110) rounded out the top five.
Jamie Glenn took home top billing in the triple jump as the freshman recorded a personal-record leap of 12.14 meters (39-10) while Tatyana Bryant took second with a mark of 11.99 meters (39-4). Bryant also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 5.69 meters (18-8)
Breanna Alston took second in both the 100 and 200-meter dash events. Alston posted a time of 11.71 seconds in the 100-meter dash while clocking in at 23.85 seconds in the 200-meter event.
She also took sixth in the long jump with a leap of 5.39 meters (17-8.25) while fellow sprinter D'Shawrna McLucas finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.29 seconds.
Cassie Crawford grabbed second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.75 meters (12-3.5) while Chelsea Farr (3.60 meters - 11-9.75) tied for third. Debra Domermuth (3.60 meters - 11-9.75) and Meredith Wilson (3.47 meters - 11-3.75) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Appalachian's 4x100-meter relay team of Alston, McLucas, Bryant and Breahna Morrison finished third with a time of 47.35 while the 4x400-meter relay squad of Alston, Morrison, Taryn Stern and Shelby Howell also finished third in a time of 3:49.15.
Morrison finished sixth in the 400-meter dash (57.56) while Justin Stocks (4:40.09) and Amanda Hamilton (4:41.61) took sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run. Hamilton set a new personal record in the event and also finished third in the 10,000 meters (36:33.28).
Sarah Williamson (36:50.89) finished in fourth in the 10,000 meters while Meaghan McCauley (37:10.51) and Dana Cox (37:23.53) took fifth and seventh. Both McCauley and Cox set new personal records while McCauley's time was good enough to move into 9th place in school history.
Stocks set a personal record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to take fourth and moved into fifth in school history with a time of 11:00.19 while Kayla Schneider (11:01.57) took fifth and moved into sixth-place in school history in the event.
Mary Theresa Montgomery and Janet Watson finished fourth and seventh in the high jump. Montgomery posted a mark of 1.62 meters (5-3.75) while Watson recorded a leap of 1.57 meters (5-1.75).
App State's contingent of throwers put out an impressive performance with 10 top-eight marks in four different events. Jasmine Suydam took third in the discus throw (140) while finishing fifth in the shot put (43-10) and eighth in the hammer throw with a personal-record toss (155-5).
Ana DeLeon snagged fifth in both the discus (135-4) and hammer (159-11) throws, setting personal records in both. Her performance in the hammer throw was the 10th-best throw in school history.
Jocelyn Parnell finished eighth in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 12.71 meters (41-8.5) while landing third in the javelin with a personal-record throw of 128-8 feet, the eighth-best mark in school history.
Deanne Tiplady and Brittany Pierce rounded out Appalachian's performances with fourth and fifth-place showings in the javelin. Tiplady recorded a throw of 127-10 while Pierce set a personal record with a mark of 114-4.
The Mountaineers will send a small contingent of athletes to the prestigious Penn Relays later this week. The events begin on Thursday and conclude on Saturday.
