McVeigh Scores Two in Women's Soccer Win

Oct. 23, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. - ASU junior Sam McVeigh had a breakout day, as she earned her first two goals of the season to lift Appalachian State women's soccer (6-10-2, 2-6-2 SoCon) to a 2-1 victory over Southern Conference opponent UNCG (8-8-1, 7-2-1 SoCon) at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

"Our girls worked hard to get the win," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "[Amy] Kolowsky did a great job, made some great saves and held on to the ball. We had to go deep into our team, but everyone stepped up to the challenge. Sam [McVeigh] was unbelieveable, and our players stayed together and positive the whole game."

The victory gives Appalachian its sixth win of the season, one more than coach Strickland's debut season in 2010.

UNCG got on the scoreboard quickly. In the third minute, Ashley Stokes served up a cross from the left side, and Kristin Player connected on her eighth goal of the season from six yards. The Spartans totaled five shots in the opening half.

In the 17th minute, Appalachian notched its only shot of the half but made good on the opportunity. Callie Johnson's pass was partially deflected but still found McVeigh at the top of the penalty box. McVeigh converted her first goal of the season from distance to level the score 1-1, which held through halftime.

The Spartans recorded six shots in the second half, but ASU keeper Amy Kolowsky did a fantastic job making four saves total in the game.

With the second period winding down, Meggie Graham pressured the UNCG defense and won the ball deep in Spartan territory. UNCG keeper Kelsey Kearney had to foul Graham to prevent the goal and ejected for the foul in the 89th minute.

Alex Perry entered as a replacement between the pipes, and McVeigh was selected to take the penalty kick. The junior came through again and earned Appalachian the 2-1 victory.

Senior Katy Dodd and McVeigh led the Black and Gold with two shots apiece.

The game was the Apps' third with a game-winning goal in the final two minutes, following losses to Army and Georgia Southern in those games' waning seconds.

The Mountaineers will play their final regular-season game on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to face Western Carolina.
