JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Appalachian State men's track and field returned to action for day two of East Tennessee State's annual Niswonger Invitational. Once again, several Mountaineers had outstanding individual performances against a talented field.

Brian Graves led a strong group of Mountaineer distance runners in the 5000m run. Graves' time of 15:06.77 earned him a fifth place finish.  Sophomore Sean Soderman (15:19.34, 12th overall) and senior Michael Walker (15:24.57, 15th overall) claimed top-15 finishes as well.

Sophomore Mason Campbell (9:03.88, 14th overall) and freshman Charles Wofford (9:09.51, 24th overall) both established new personal-best marks in the 3000m run to lead the Mountaineers. Senior Alec Meyer also set a new season-best mark of 9:15.73.

In the 800m, sophomore Jay Weaver led the Mountaineers with a season-best time of 2:03.45. Weaver's mark was good for a 37th place finish overall.

Patrick Morgan also set a new season-best mark for the Mountaineers Saturday, turning in a time of 8:31.17 in the 3000m run to finish eighth. Josh Houser (8:45.54) claimed an 11th place finish in the 3000m for Appalachian as well. Fellow distance standout, freshman Alex Taylor set a new season-best mark in the mile with a time of 4:16.77 to take fourth place. Seniors Brandon Hudgins (4:19.81) and Bud Galloway (4:19.87) claimed ninth and 10th place finishes in the mile for the Apps.

Junior Philip Bush claimed a 12th place finish with a 22-05.75 mark in the long jump. Bush's performance also established a new season-best jump.

Matt Boruff followed up a nice first-day performance in the 60m hurdles Friday with a new personal-best mark in the pole vault Saturday. Boruff cleared 15-7 to earn a third-place tie for the Mountaineers. The 15-7 mark also moved Boruff into seventh place in the ASU record book. Junior Ryan Twiford's 14-7 mark in the pole vault was good for 11th place. Boruff also earned a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.41.

The shot put was once again a strong event for the Mountaineers Saturday, as ASU placed three athletes in the top-15. Junior Malcolm Styers led the way with a fourth place finish after a season-best toss of 52-1.25. Styers was joined in the top-five by classmate Jerod Gardner, who set a new personal-best with a 51-11.25 that earned a fifth-place finish. Gardner also moved into fifth-place in the ASU record books with Saturday's performance. Sophomore Jared Stalling also set a season-best mark with a 46-10 throw to claim a 14th place finish.

Freshman Landon Powell earned a seventh-place finish in the 60m dash with a time of 6.99.

Freshmen Brad Triplett and Colin Reber also notched season-best performances in the high jump for the Apps Saturday. Both athletes cleared 6-4.75 to finish in a tie for sixth place.

The 4x400m relay team of Nick Zeller, John Svoboda, Tyler Combs and Landon Powell took home a fifth place finish with a time of 3:18.97 to close out Saturday's action.

Appalachian State track and field will return to action next weekend, travelling to Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the Liberty Invitational.
