Baseball Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Honors

BOONE, N.C. – App State Baseball student-athletes, Charlie EvansEverette HarrisGage PetersonEthan Puig and Max Tramontana earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators (CSC), the organization announced this week.
 
All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances both on the field and in the classroom. To qualify, a student-athlete must be a key contributor who earns at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale) and is at least a sophomore both academically and athletically.
 
Evans slashed.358/.427/.503 with nine doubles, a team-high four triples and two home runs in 51 games for the Mountaineers. One of the best defensive center fielders in the country, Evans also led the Sun Belt with a .420 batting average in league play and tallied a 22-game hitting streak, the fifth longest by a Mountaineer in program history. The Levittown, Pa. native posted 15 multi-hit games, nine multi-RBI efforts and led the Mountaineers with 10 stolen bases. He graduated from App State in May with a degree in professional studies while maintaining a 3.64 GPA.
 
Harris made 22 relief appearances for the Mountaineers, going 1-2 with a career-best 4.50 ERA. In 32.0 innings the Charlotte, N.C. native held opponents to a .241 batting average and struck out 16, pitching to a WHIP of 1.22. The senior did not allow a run in 14 outings, including five straight scoreless appearances from March 29 through April 10. Harris graduated in May with a degree in management and posted a 3.65 GPA.
 
The Sun Belt's Newcomer of the Year, Peterson boasted an 8-1 record in 15 starts to tie for the most wins among the league's pitchers in the regular season. The right-hander struck out 107 batters in 85.0 innings, the second-most strikeouts by an App State pitcher in program history and the most by a Sun Belt pitcher in the regular season. He held opponents to a .196 batting average and struck out at least six batters in 14 of his 15 starts, including a career-high 11 batters against Presbyterian on March 7. Peterson recorded six quality starts and was named a first team All-Sun Belt selection. The junior holds a 3.56 GPA while pursuing a degree in management. For his exceptional achievements, Peterson will advance to the national ballot to be considered for Academic All-America honors later this month.
 
 
Puig appeared in 53 games and made 52 starts, split between first base and third base. The Miami, Fla., native slashed .326/.378/.438 with 12 doubles, two triples and three home runs, driving in 45. Puig walked 17 times while striking out just 17 times in 224 at-bats, while his 47 hits in Sun Belt play were tied for second in the league. The sophomore posted a 3.66 GPA while pursuing a degree in recreation management. 
 
Tramontana went 2-2 with a career-best 2.61 ERA and a save across 24 relief appearances for the Mountaineers. The Cincinnati, Ohio native struck out 34 batters in 38.0 innings of work, holding opponents to a .189 batting average and led the team with a 1.00 WHIP. Across his final 12 outings, Tramontana allowed just three earned runs in 22.1 innings, for a 1.23 ERA. He graduated in May with a degree in applied physics and maintained a 3.68 GPA.
