BOONE, N.C. – The App State tennis team continues its road trip with a matchup against Georgia Southern on Friday, followed by a trip to Conway, S.C., to take on Coastal Carolina. Both matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m.
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers (8-10) split their weekend, falling to then-No. 62 Old Dominion on Friday before responding with a crucial 4-2 win over East Carolina on Sunday.
Ninth-ranked
Savannah Dada-Mascoll extended her winning streak to 16, matching her career best set in 2024. She added another ranked win to her resume, taking down No. 102 Kira Matushkina of Old Dominion in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, before cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 against East Carolina.
Freshman
Allegra Hodson clinched the win over ECU, staying resilient after dropping the second set to earn her eighth win of the season. In a match where App State was unable to field an athlete at No. 6,
Ruby Broadbent picked up a critical win at No. 5 in straight sets for her second consecutive victory.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Two-time Sun Belt Women's Tennis Player of the Week Dada-Mascoll leads App State with a 16-1 record at the No. 1 spot. Her only singles loss came in the season opener against then-No. 23 Ange Oby Kajuru (now ranked No. 7). Since that loss, Dada-Mascoll has dropped only two sets; the most recent occurred in the first set against UT Arlington on Feb. 28.
Eighteen matches into the season, freshmen
Sreenidhi Balaji and
Allegra Hodson are both at or above .500 in singles. As a doubles pair, they are 7-5 at the No. 3 spot, picking up needed wins to secure doubles points.
Third-year head coach
Hannah Fetters has 99 career wins, leaving her one shy of the 100-win milestone. She returns six players from last year's roster: Dada-Mascoll, Broadbent, Cleveland, Manyube,
Taya Powell, and
Isabela Romanichen. The squad also welcomed newcomers Balaji and Hodson.
Scouting the Eagles
Georgia Southern (7-9) enters the matchup having lost three of its last four matches, falling in its last two against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana. The Mountaineers have faced common opponents in Mercer and North Florida, with Georgia Southern taking a 4-1 win over the Bears. The Eagles are led by sophomore Evelyn Warkentin, who is 12-3 from the No. 1 spot and the only player with more than eight wins. Georgia Southern returns six players from last year's squad and adds one newcomer.
The Eagles are led by head coach Sean McCaffrey, who is in his ninth year at the helm.
Scouting the Chanticleers
Coastal Carolina (11-3) enters Saturday's matchup on a two-match winning streak, with wins over UNC Wilmington and Gardner-Webb. Both the Mountaineers and the Chanticleers have faced Davidson this season, with App State earning a 5-2 victory over the Wildcats, while Coastal Carolina fell 4-1.
The Chanticleers have two players with 10 or more wins, led by junior Diana Zuba, who is 11-3 on the season playing at Nos. 1 and 2.
