New Program Record and DMR Bronze Highlights First Day at the SBC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  The App State women's track and field team registered a new women's 60-meter program record as well as a podium finish for the distance medley relay (DMR) quartet on the first day of competition at the Sun Belt Indoor Championships. Additionally, seven Mountaineers advanced to Tuesday's finals in five events. At the close of the first day, App State is tied for eighth with seven points in the team standings.
 
Junior Kendall Johnson set a new women's 60-meter program record with a time of 7.32, placing first in the prelims to advance to Tuesday's final. Her time was also 0.10 shy of the Sun Belt conference and championship meet record of 7.22, which was set in 2022 by Coastal Carolina's Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. Johnson surpassed her previous App State program record of 7.39, which she set at the VMI Team Challenge on Jan. 17.
 
The quartet of sophomores Savannah Moore and Micayla Collins, senior Addison Ollendick-Smith, and freshman Josie Jackson earned the Mountaineers' first medal of the weekend after placing third with a time of 11:50.84 in the women's DMR. Individually, Ollendick-Smith and Jackson advanced to the women's 800-meter finals after clocking times of 2:14.02 and 2:14.42 to finish among the top eight in the prelims. Additionally, Moore and freshman Tessa Massa placed fifth (4:58.63) and eighth (4:59.56), respectively, in the women's mile prelims to advance to the final. Moore moved to 10th in the all-time list, where she matches Kathyrn Farina.  
 
Junior Jayla Adams and senior Damyja Alejandro-Ortiz advanced to the women's 400-meter final after clocking times of 55.43 and 55.79 to place third and seventh, respectively, in the prelims. Adams' time elevated her to third in the all-time list, where she is tied with Alejandro-Ortiz. App State also saw Alejandro-Ortiz and Johnson qualify for the women's 200-meter final. The pair finished sixth (24.04) and seventh (24.09) in the prelims.
 
Sophomore Emily Edwards placed eighth in the women's weight throw with a toss of 16.86m (55' 3.75") to score the Mountaineers' first point of the championship meet.
 
Action at the 2026 Sun Belt Indoor Championships resumes at 11 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CT) with the multis. Field events will begin at 12:15 p.m. ET (11:15 a.m. CT) and running events start at 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CT). The meet will be available to stream on ESPN+.
