BLACKSBURG, Va. – The App State women's track and field team's first day at Virginia Tech's Hokie Invitational on Friday was highlighted by two new program records and 13 top 10 finishes.
Freshman
Josie Jackson broke the App State's women's 1,000-meter record with a personal best of 2:52.62. The previous record of 2:52.76 was set last season by
Lauren Johnston. Jackson placed fourth in Friday's race and was followed by sophomore
Savannah Moore, who rounded out the top five with a personal best of 2:55.08. Moore's time elevated her to third all-time.
Junior
Jayla Adams stopped the clock at 38.42 to break App State's women's 300-meter record. The previous record of 38.50 was set in 2013 by Breanna Alston. Adams finished second overall in Friday's race Senior
Damyja Alejandro-Ortiz placed third with a personal best of 38.56, which also elevated her to third in the program all-time list. Junior
Nicole Wells placed fourth (39.23), senior
Daye Talley finished fifth (39.25, PR), and junior
Kendall Johnson took sixth (39.35, PR). Talley and Johnson also moved up to sixth and seventh, respectively in the Mountaineers' all-time list.
With a personal best of 7.52, Adams also placed second in the women's 60-meter prelims. Her time was a 0.02 improvement of her previous best (7.54) and she remains fifth in the program all-time list. In the women's long jump, freshman
Alana Braxton landed third with a leap of 5.92m (19' 5.25"). Sophomore
Emily Edwards placed sixth in the women's weight throw with a personal best toss of 17.10m (56' 1.25") and freshman
Tessa Massa placed ninth in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:12.24.
Competition resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the field events. Action on the track resumes at 11 a.m.
