App State Field Hockey Welcomes Vermont in Sunday Matchup

BOONE, N.C. — The App State field hockey team will take on Vermont in a nonconference contest Sunday at 11 a.m.

Before the game, there will be a Student Yosef Club tailgate with cornhole boards, and a postgame clinic with the players will be held on the field.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0) are coming off a 5-3 comeback win, featuring goals from Sophia Baxter, Sarah Callery, Hadley Kuzmicky and Baylie Phillips. Lise Boekaar added three assists to her season total (14), now holding the most in a single season in App State Field Hockey history in only six games.

Scouting the Mountaineers
Through their first six games, they are second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in goals (28), assists (22), penalty corners (55) and scoring average (4.667).

Boekaar has been on a tear this season, leading the MAC in assists (11) and total points (28), while also ranking second in goals (7) and shots (30). Her performance during the opening weekend earned her the MAC Offensive Player of the Week honor after she was responsible for the team's first 10 goals of the season.

On the defensive end, Baxter has been a force, earning the MAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for her play against Davidson. She has tallied five goals and one assist this season.

The 2025 team features three players who earned All-MAC selections in 2024. Midfielder Boekaar was named to the All-MAC First Team and the NFHCA South Region First Team. Henriette Stegen was named to the All-MAC Second Team, while Frederique Grimbergen earned a spot on the All-MAC Freshman Team.

Six Mountaineers are on the 2025 NFHCA Division I Watch List: returning players Baxter, Boekaar, Grimbergen and Stegen, and newcomers Kate Richardson and Calista Schwartz. Baxter represented the Mountaineers at the Senior Nexus Championship last summer.

Scouting the Catamounts
Vermont (5-2) enters the matchup after an 11-9 (3-3 America East) season in 2024, taking down UMass Lowell, Albany and New Hampshire to claim the America East championship. The Catamounts are led by head coach Kate Pfeifer, who is in her 11th season.

The Catamounts return 14 players from last year's squad, welcoming eight newcomers to the 2025 squad.

This is the second all-time meeting between the Mountaineers and the Catamounts, with App State claiming the first win 4-3 in 2013.
