Second Half Heroics Lead App State Field Hockey to Conference Opening Win

BOONE, N.C. — The App State field hockey team defeated the Ohio Bobcats 5-3 in the first conference game of the season.

The Mountaineers (5-1, 1-0 MAC) found their rhythm in the second half, scoring all five goals in the last 30 minutes to defeat the Bobcats (1-6, 0-1 MAC).

Sophia Baxter, Sarah Callery, Hadley Kuzmicky and Baylie Phillips all scored in the victory, with Lise Boekaar adding three assists. She now has the most single-season assists in program history with 14, passing Carli Ciocco, who had 13 in 2022. Three more assists pushes Boekaar past Friederike Stegen for the most career assists in App State Field Hockey history.

How It Happened
1st: The Bobcats came out fast, scoring two goals in the opening period. Both teams earned three penalty corners, but the Mountaineers were unable to score.

2nd: The period was scoreless for both teams. The Mountaineers earned two corners but were unable to find the back of the cage. Claire Grenis recorded her first save of the game, thwarting a counterattack and keeping the score 2-0 heading into halftime.

3rd: The Mountaineers' offense exploded in the period, tallying four shots and scoring three times. Kuzmicky put the Mountaineers on the board with her fourth goal of the season, assisted by Bridget Donovan. Callery scored her first goal of the day and season by tipping in a shot from Boekaar. Phillips scored off a penalty corner in the final moments of the period, giving the Mountaineers their first lead of the day, 3-2.

4th: With the Mountaineers holding the lead, Ohio battled back and scored the equalizer, tying the contest at three apiece. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Baxter found the back of the cage, assisted by Boekaar, to give the Mountaineers a late lead. To close out the contest, Frederique Grimbergen took the ball past midfield, where a diving effort from Kassie Paul set up Callery for a diving goal, pushing the lead to two and giving the Mountaineers a 5-3 victory in the conference opener.
