BOONE, N.C. – App State men's golf head coach
Alan Cress announced his retirement from App State on Monday.
"We are very thankful to Alan for his efforts in leading App State Men's Golf the last three years," Director of Athletics
Doug Gillin said. "We wish Alan and his family all the best in his retirement. We will immediately begin our search for the next men's golf head coach."
After graduating from App State in 1991, Cress had successful runs on the teaching, business, administrative and event-planning sides of golf prior to returning to his alma mater in a coaching role. After working as an assistant coach for men's golf during the 2021-22 season, he was named App State's head coach in June 2022.
"Coaching at my alma mater has been the honor of a lifetime," Cress said. "These past three years have been filled with growth, pride and unforgettable moments with a special group of young men. Appalachian State shaped who I am, and being able to give back to this program has been a dream come true. As I choose to step away, I will always be a Mountaineer."
Under Cress' watch, App State produced the top two team rounds in program history, the three best individual scoring averages for a non-COVID-shortened season in program history and three of the top 54-hole individual totals in program history. The Mountaineers also had four different individual rounds of 65, tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history, behind only Sverrir Haraldsson's 63 in 2022, when Cress was an assistant coach.
