GILLIN: A New Era in College Athletics; A Mountain of Opportunity

App Family,

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken gave final approval to the landmark House v. NCAA settlement. This approval marks a defining moment in college athletics and the start to a new era for App State Athletics.

For the first time, beginning on July 1, 2025, institutions will be permitted to directly share revenue with student-athletes. Additionally, the settlement removes previous scholarship limits while establishing new scholarship and roster parameters.

A newly formed College Sports Commission has been created to facilitate revenue sharing and to ensure that NIL deals made between student-athletes and third parties are fair and comply with the established rules. A Deloitte-operated platform and clearinghouse called NIL Go has been established to review third-party NIL deals over $600 to ensure a valid business purpose and that the compensation associated with the deals does not exceed a reasonable range.

With this new model taking shape, the House settlement approval represents a significant shift in college athletics, but our values and commitment to comprehensive excellence at App State remain the same. In preparation for this shift, we have been evaluating current internal structures, operational workflows and resource allocation to ensure we are positioned to thrive in the new era of college athletics.

We will implement a sustainable and strategic resource allocation model to offer scholarship enhancements that meet the needs of our sport programs. We will continue investing in our student-athletes and programs, positioning App State Athletics to attract and retain top talent in an increasingly competitive landscape.

This is a transformational moment in college athletics, and App State is well-positioned for the future. We are meeting the moment with great energy and are excited as we head toward the mountain of opportunities that lie ahead. We will continue to communicate updates as this new model evolves.

Your ongoing support remains vital in helping us navigate this exciting new chapter together, and we are incredibly grateful to App Nation.

It's great to be a Mountaineer!

Go App,

Doug Gillin
