Mountaineers' Thursday Lesson Plan Features Education Day Game Against Marshall

BOONE, N.C. - The App State women's basketball team has a noon Education Day game against Marshall on Thursday in this week's lesson plan. The Mountaineers are planning on welcoming students from area schools for the conference match-up. Admission for the game is free for fans.  
 
Last Time Out
App State posted a 78-68 victory over Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. for the second installment of the MAC-SBC Challenge. App State went 2-0 in the challenge this season, and closed out conference play with a 7-5 record. The Mountaineers led the Broncos for the duration of play on Saturday and held WMU to eight points in the first quarter. Junior Emily Carver, senior Faith Alston, junior Zada Porter, and sophomore Chaé Harris all scored double-figures for the Black and Gold. Carver and Porter combined for six of the Mountaineers' 12 treys. Alston and Porter both shot a perfect 3-of-3 from the line. App State shot 47.3% from the field, 42.9% from the arc, and 77.8% from the line. The Mountaineers held Western Michigan to three treys, five second chance points, and nine fast break points.  
 
Ranked Mountaineers
For the week of Feb. 5-11, fifth-year senior Taylor Lewis led the league and ranked eighth nationally in steals and ranked 17th nationally in steals per game. She also tied Texas State's Ja'Niah Henson and JMU's Ashanti Barnes to lead the league in free throw percentage for the week. Carver ranked third in the league for made 3-pointers and 3-pointers per game. App State led the Sun Belt in assists per game, free throws made per game, scoring offense, and 3-pointers per game last week. 
 
In Sun Belt-only play, Alston stands fourth in the scoring and assists categories. The Mountaineers rank third in the league for made 3-pointers and team defensive rebounds. App State rounds out the top-five for team 3-point percentage and steals. 
 
On the season as a whole, Alston stands third in assists and rounds out the top-five in scoring. Carver checks in at fourth in the SBC in the made 3-pointers per game category and fifth in the steals category. Moffitt rounds out the top-five in the rebounds category. App State ranks fourth for made 3-pointers for the season.
 
Last Time Against Marshall
App State met Marshall in Huntington, WVa. on Jan. 31, 2024 as part of the Mountaineers' four-game road-stretch. The Black and Gold fell to the Herd, 81-69. Alston netted a team-high 16 points, while Carver netted 15 points and Ingram netted 10. Moffitt pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and Alston dished out a team-high four assists. 
 
Scouting Marshall
Marshall is 17-6 (11-1 SBC) on the season. After clashing with the Mountaineers on Jan. 31, the Herd suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to James Madison, 72-63, in Huntington, WVa. The Herd recovered with a 74-42 home win against Louisiana on Feb. 7. Marshall did not participate in the 2023-24 MAC-SBC Challenge. 
 
Abby Beeman, Breanna Campbell, and Aislynn Hayes continue to lead the Herd as the team's top scorers, averaging 16.4, 15.2, and 14.4 points per game, respectively. Beeman also leads the team in the rebounds, assists, and steals categories. 
 
On the Horizon 
App State will host Georgia State for its Play4Kay Pink Day game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and a ticket to the women's game will also get fans into the men's 4:30 p.m. game against Louisiana. Chuck-A-Duck will be back during halftime of the women's game. The first 200 students at the game will receive a free duck and there is a $500 prize for the winner of the Chuck-A-Duck contest. The Mountaineers will also be selling a special Pink Day shirt on the concourse.  
 
App State women's basketball alumni are also encouraged to join the team for Alumni Day festivities on Feb. 17.
