App State Hosts Davidson to Cap off Home-Opening Weekend

BOONE, N.C. – The App State Mountaineers (2-1) will look to rebound off the first loss in the Emily Dinsmore era against the Davidson Wildcats on Sunday at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field. First touch is slated for 3 p.m. and can be streamed on Twitch, YouTube and our Facebook page.
 
This is the 77th matchup between the Mountaineers and the Wildcats, making it the most times App State has faced a single opponent in program history. Davidson leads the all-time series 34-41-1, but the Mountaineers have won five of the last six contests.
 
Despite the loss last time out, App State has won 13 of their last 15 games dating back to Oct. 2, 2022. The Mountaineers currently one of two teams to have a winning record through three games in the MAC conference.

Last Time Out
App State was defeated in their last contest by the Drexel Dragons 3-0.
 
Goalkeeper Addie Clark posted five saves to give her 14 on the season and 219 for her career. The fifth-year goalkeeper has now held her opposition scoreless in three halves this season.
 
Bridget Donovan led the charge offensively for the Mountaineers against Drexel, tallying two shots on goal. Kassie Paul and Jillian Orcutt also slapped shots on goal for App State, but the team was unable to crack the back of the net.
 
Scouting the Mountaineers
The Mountaineers come into this matchup with the Wildcats having won 13 of their last 15 games. The Black & Gold have also won eight of their last 10 home games. The team's 8-1 home record in 2022 is the best home record the Mountaineers have recorded in the modern era.
 
Head coach Emily Dinsmore won her first two games as head coach of the field hockey program. She became the first head coach to accomplish that feat since Mandy Latz won her first two games in 2003. 
 
App State currently sits atop the MAC Conference in multiple offensive categories, including goals per game (2.33), assists (10), points (24) and are second in scoring margin (0.66). Both Sophia Baxter and Florine Koopman are tied for first in goals scored with two.
 
 
Five different Mountaineers scored a goal on opening weekend in Towson, Md. Additionally, nine Mountaineers recorded a point during the two-game road trip. Of those nine players, eight tallied multiple points with Koopman leading the charge with five.
 
Sophia Baxter was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for her play against Towson and Georgetown last weekend. She tallied two goals within five minutes of each other on Sunday to help propel the team to a 4-1 win. She became the first Mountaineer to win MAC Offensive Player of the Week since Sarah Farrell was honored in Oct. 2022, and the first freshman to be named since Henriette Stegen in Sept. 2022.
 
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson comes to the high country boasting a 2-1 record on the young season. Davidson also spent opening weekend in Towson, Md., where they squared off against Towson and Georgetown.
 
Davidson lost to Towson in a close battle that was decided by shootouts, before beating Queens in their last contest on Friday 7-1.
 
Hannah Merritt, Sib Naaktgeboren and Abby Pompeo each have recorded two goals this season to lead the team. Sophomore Hannah Merritt leads the team in points with five.
 
Series History
The Mountaineers have faced Davidson more than any other opponent in program history. This will be the 77th matchup between the two teams with Davidson leading the all-time series 34-41-1. App State has won five of the last six matchups against the Wildcats.
 
App State reigned victorious in last season's matchup, posting a 3-0 victory to cap off the regular season. Head coach Emily Dinsmore has never faced Davidson as a head coach but is 5-1 as an assistant against the Wildcats.
 
Charlotte Bosma and Henriette Stegen both scored goals in last season's game against the Wildcats, while goalkeeper Addie Clark and the Mountaineer defense posted their sixth shutout of the season.
 
Five Mountaineers on the active roster have scored a goal against the Wildcats in their career. Junior Charlotte Bosma has scored three goals against the Wildcats, including a multi-goal performance in 2021. Fifth-year forward Sarah Farrell has also notched a multi-goal game against Davidson, accomplishing this in 2021. Captain Grace Ball has also had a memorable performance versus Davidson, slapping her first career goal past the Wildcat goalkeeper against in 2020.
 
Coach's Thoughts
"We want to come out with that front-foot mentality and give it our all in the first 15 minutes of the game," head coach Emily Dinsmore said. "We know what we are capable of, and we need to put a full game together to get back on track against Davidson."
