Black History Month Spotlights: Jazz Weaver

During Black History Month, App State Athletics is highlighting some of the accomplishments and perspective of coaches, administrators and staff members who serve as role models to our student-athletes.

Today, we hear from App State women's basketball assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Jazz Weaver. Weaver is in her first year coaching at App State after serving as the Director of Program Development for the Charlotte women's basketball. Over the course of her career, she had made stops at East Carolina (2017-18), Northern Illinois (2016-17), and UNC Greensboro (2014-16). Weaver also competed on the women's basketball team at UNCG from 2018-12.

Q: Why is celebrating Black History important to you?
Weaver: Celebrating Black History is important to me because it's the foundation of who I am as a Black woman today. I think it's also a month where we shine a light on those that came before us and shaped the future of today.

Q: Why is it important to have representation within athletics?
Weaver: It's important for student-athletes to have a visual of someone who looks like them doing something that's impactful in today's world. It provides inspiration and also security that someone can relate to them on a different level than just the sport they play, but in life.

Q: What is the biggest piece of advice you would give to someone looking to pursue a career in college athletics?
Weaver: If you decide to pursue a career in athletics start networking now. You come across so many individuals on a daily basis just being a student-athlete that can help you along the way if you decide to go into athletics at any level. Maximize your resources.
