Mountaineers Head to Statesboro to Challenge Georgia Southern

BOONE, N.C. - The App State volleyball team is headed to Statesboro, Ga. to take on Georgia Southern on Nov. 4 and 5. Friday's match is set for 6 p.m. and Saturday's match is slated for 1 p.m. Both matches will be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers capped competition at the Holmes Center for the 2023 campaign on Oct. 26 and 27, splitting a pair of matches with Old Dominion. 
 
On Thursday, App State swept Old Dominion in three sets, marking the Black and Gold's ninth sweep of the season. Fifth year senior McCall Denny and sophomore Maya Winterhoff matched for the team-high in kills, recording nine apiece. Winterhoff and freshman Delanie Grevengoed also tallied four blocks each. Senior Sophie Cain and redshirt freshman Katie Cruise posted 18 assists and 13 assists, respectively. Cruise and sophomore Kenady Roper served up two aces each. 
 
Denny's 1,000th career kill highlighted Friday's match despite a 3-1 loss to the Monarchs. Denny totaled 14 kills on the night as well as 11 digs for her 28th career double-double. She now has 1,011 career kills. Winterhoff tallied another four blocks on the night, while sophomore Alyssa McBean served up four aces. Cruise recorded a team-high 24 assists and Roper made 18 digs. 
 
Ranked Mountaineers
Winterhoff continues to lead the Sun Belt in the hitting percentage category (.383) as well as the total blocks category (110). In the NCAA rankings, Winterhoff stands 26th in total blocks and among the top-40 in hitting percentage. She also stands second in the SBC and in the top-50 in the nation for blocks per set, averaging 1.25 per set this season. 
 
App State ranks third in the Sun Belt for aces per set on the season, averaging 1.65. The Mountaineers ranks fourth in the league for blocks per set (2.42) and team total blocks (213). Nationally, App State ranks among the top-60 in both categories. 
 
Scouting Georgia Southern
Last season, the Mountaineers posted a pair of 3-2 victories over Georgia Southern on Nov. 4 and 5 in Boone. 
 
Reagan Barth leads Georgia Southern in the kills and aces categories with 262 kills and 30 aces on the season thus far. Kirsten Barrett and Callaway Cason lead the team in the assists category with 476 and 383, respectively. Ashlyn Lovett holds the team-high in the digs category with 372, while Ailie Hair leads in the blocks category, totaling 87. Georgia Southern leads the Sun Belt in the hitting percentage category (.259) and is second in the blocks per set category, averaging 2.58 per set this season. 
 
Georgia Southern is 17-6 (7-5 SBC) this fall. The Eagles opened the 2023 campaign with five consecutive wins, four of which were sweeps. The Eagles also posted six consecutive victories from Sept. 8 to Sept. 22. In Sun Belt action, Georgia Southern has tallied six sweeps including four in a row spanning from Oct. 13 to Oct. 21. The Eagles return to Statesboro after a pair of losses in Harrisonburg, Va. against James Madison.

The Mountaineers will close out the regular season with a pair of matches at Louisiana on Nov. 10 and 11. Friday's match is set for 6 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET) and Saturday's match will be at 1 p.m. CT (7 p.m. ET). Both will be available to stream on ESPN+.
