CONWAY, S.C. – The App State volleyball team fell short to Coastal Carolina in three sets (17-25, 23-25, 20-25) in Conway, S.C. on Friday.

App State (13-7, 4-5 SBC) was led by senior
Keionna Mackey, who tallied nine kills on the night. Redshirt senior

Maria Contreras combined for 24 of App State's 31 assists. Sophomore
MeMe Davis led the team with 11 digs and tallied six assists of her own.
The Chanticleers (15-6, 7-2 SBC) controlled the first set after establishing an early 7-2 lead. App State steadily chipped away at the deficit, narrowing it to three with a 5-0 run that featured a block from the duo of Contreras and senior
Maya Winterhoff and a pair of Mackey kills. The Black and Gold held Coastal Carolina to several set points after a Chanticleer error, a Heidemann ace, and a kill from sophomore
Bella Hutchens, but the Chants took the set, 25-17.
In the second set, the Mountaineers and Chanticleers knotted the score on 10 occasions and swapped the lead four times. Down 8-4, App State built off three kills from Mackey, a block from the duo of Contreras and sophomore
Lou Johnson, and a Winterhoff ace to push ahead, 9-8. Davis set Hutchens and Morris up for kills and Heidemann set Johnson up for a kill to keep the Mountaineers ahead, 15-12. Coastal Carolina answered with a 5-0 run to edge ahead, 17-15. With a trio of Chanticleer errors and a block from Winterhoff and Mackey, App State pushed forward, 19-18. Despite a kill from Johnson, CCU surged ahead with a 3-0 run to take the set, 25-23.
Like the set before, App State and Coastal Carolina swapped the lead four times in the third set. Kills from Morris and Winterhoff knotted the score at 5-5. The Chants jumped ahead, 13-6, with an 8-1 run. App State cut the deficit to three (16-13) with a solo block from Winterhoff sandwiched between a pair of kills from Morris. The Mountaineers found momentum with a 6-0 run that featured a kill from Winterhoff, a block from the duo of Contreras and Winterhoff, and a pair of kills from redshirt sophomore
Delanie Grevengoed to push ahead, 19-18. Coastal Carolina answered with a 7-1 run to take the set, 25-20, and the sweep.
