BOONE, N.C. –
Austin St. Laurent and
Alex Aguila each tallied two-hit games for the Mountaineers at the plate, but it was not enough in a 9-3 loss to Coastal Carolina Saturday at Smith Stadium.
After the Chanticleers (19-13-1, 8-6-1) took the lead with a two-run second, App State responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Phillip Cole was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and St. Laurent followed with a single.
RJ Johnson sacrificed a pair into scoring position, and Aguila worked a walk to load the bases.
Andrew Terrell then ripped a two-run double down the left field line to tie the score. Later in the inning,
Dylan Rogers plated a run with an RBI groundout to give the Mountaineers a 3-2 lead.
App State (11-22, 3-12) held that lead until the fifth inning when the Chanticleers used the home run ball to plate four runs in the frame. Tanner Garrison hit a solo homer to right-center to tie the score, and later in the inning Graham Brown connected on a three-run shot to center field to put the Chanticleers ahead, 6-3.
Caleb Cross impressed in relief for the Mountaineers, working a career-high 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. Cross faced the minimum through the first 11 batters, but then gave up a double and a walk that led to a two-run triple from Cooper Weiss, who scored on the play on an error, that pushed the lead to 9-3.
The Mountaineers return to action Tuesday when they travel to Winston-Salem for a midweek battle with Wake Forest. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. The 2022 App State Baseball Season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
