Mountaineers Complete Day 1 of U.S. Amateur

OAKMONT & VERONA, Pa. — App State's Ryan Marter opened U.S. Amateur play Monday with three birdies in a round of 74.
 
Marter finished with a 4-over total heading into Tuesday's second and final day of stroke play. Timothius Tirto Tamardi will also compete Tuesday after beginning the event with an 83.
 
Marter started his round on the ninth hole at Longue Vue Club, moved to 1 under with a birdie on the par-three 10th hole and had two birdies on his first five holes. He stood at 1 over halfway through his round and added a birdie on his 17th hole of the day.

The U.S. Amateur began with a field of 312 players, who are participating in stroke play Monday and Tuesday. Sixty-four players will advance to match play, which begins Wednesday and then continues Thursday with rounds of 32 and 16. Quarterfinal, semifinal and 36-hole final matches will be held over the final three days.
