Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Announces Addition of 12 Student-Athletes

BOONE, N.C. – App State track & field head coach Damion McLean and associate track & field coach/cross country head coach Michael Curcio have announced the addition of 12 student-athletes to the men's track & field and cross country program.
 
Chase Burrell | Naperville, Ill. | Naperville North
Burrell is a two-time qualifier for the IHSA Cross Country State Championship. He enjoyed a strong indoor season in 2021 with PR's in the 1,600-meter run (4:22.52), the one-mile run (4:25.99) and the 3,200-meter run (9:26.07). In outdoor competition this season, Burrell has recorded a PR in the 1,600-meter run (4:26.51) and 5,000-meter run (15:32.46) during the 2021 campaign.

Rylan Haskett | Woodstock, Ga. | River Ridge
Haskett qualified for the GHSA State Cross Country Championships twice, posting his top finish of 28th in 2020. At the 2019 GA Region 6-AAAAAA Track & Field Championships, Haskett placed third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.59 and fifth in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:35.63. Haskett's parents are also graduates of App State.

Michael Maron | Suwanee, Ga. | North Gwinnett
Maron is a three-time GHSA Cross Country State Championship qualifier, finishing 14th in 2020 with a 5K PR time of 16:28.91. In outdoor competition, Maron has clocked PR's in three different events during the 2021 season in the 800-meter run (2:01.04), 1,600-meter run (4:26.22) and the 3,200-meter run (9:44.67).

Jonah Morris | Rainbow City, Ala. | Gadsden City (West Georgia)
Morris joins the Mountaineers as a transfer from West Georgia. In the 2020 cross country season, he posted two top-20 finishes. In the 2019 cross country season, he posted a pair of top 20 finishes, including a third-place finish at the UWG Home Cross Country Opener. During the 2021 outdoor season, Morris posted PR's in the 800-meter run (2:01.97) and 1,500-meter run (4:07.41).

Daniel Munoz | Mt. Pleasant, S.C. | Wando
Munoz qualified for the SCHSL Cross Country State Championships four times, posting a 5K PR time of 15:59.32 during the 2019 state championships, where he finished seventh. During the 2018 outdoor season, he placed fifth in the 1,600-meter run at the SCHSL Track & Field State Championships with a PR time of 4:24.18.

Jackson Nichols | Clemmons, N.C. | West Forsyth
Nichols qualified for the NCHSAA State Cross Country Championship in the 2020 season, placing 18th in 16:37.32. He also posted four first place finishes during the season. In indoor competition, he competed primarily in the 1,000-meter run (2:43.78) and 1,600-meter run (4:48.64). During outdoor competition in 2021, he posted PR's in the 800-meter run (1:59.03) and 1,600-meter run (4:32.90). Nichols is no stranger to the High Country as both of his parents graduated from App State.

Ethan Rhodes | Greenville, S.C. | Wade Hampton
Rhodes was a three-time qualifier for the SCHSL State Cross Country Championships, posting his best finish of third during the 2020 season. During the 2020 cross country season, he competed in seven meets, winning two and finishing in the top five each time. During the 2021 outdoor season, he recorded PR's in the 800-meter run (2:01.92), the 1,600-meter run (4:25.02) and the 3,200-meter run (9:35.00).

Schihl is a three-time qualifier for the NCHSAA State Cross Country Championship, placing seventh in 2019. He has enjoyed a solid outdoor season during 2021, recording PR's in the 800-meter run (2:01.42), 1,600-meter run (4:26.01) and 3,200-meter run (9:44.55). He qualified for the NCHSAA 3A Indoor Track & Field State Championships in three events, finishing seventh in the 1,000-meter run, ninth in the 1,600-meter run and 13th in the 3,200-meter run.

Scrocco is a three-time qualifier for the NCISAA State Cross Country Championships, capturing the state title in 2020 with a time of 16:46.50. Scrocco also qualified for the NCISAA Division II State Championship in the outdoor 800-meter run, placing third with a PR time of 1:59.18. He recorded PR's in the 1,600-meter run (4:26.84), the 3,200-meter run (9:44.00) and the 5,000-meter run (15:38.00) during the 2021 outdoor season.

Smith joins App State as a transfer from UT Martin. Smith posted a 12th place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championships in 2019. In indoor competition, he was a member of the DMR team that placed fifth at the Ohio Valley Indoor Track & Field Championships in 10:23.98. During the 2021 outdoor season, Smith posted PR's in the 800-meter run (1:57.60), 1,500-meter run (3:56.70), 5,000-meter run (14:47.83) and the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:26.47).

Stephens qualified for the FHSAA 1A/3A Outdoor State Finals in the 100-meter dash in 2021, placing fifth with a PR mark of 10.66 seconds. Also during the 2021 season, Stephens clocked PR's in both the 200-meter dash (22.87) and 400-meter dash (50.26).

Teuscher joins the Mountaineers as a transfer from Oklahoma. He placed 46th at the Big 12 Championships this season with an 8K PR time of 25:38.00. During the indoor season, he posted PR's in the 3,000-meter run (8:40.62) and 5,000-meter run (15:11.14).
