Tuthill Named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

BOONE, N.C. — The league's only pitcher with a nine-inning, complete-game win on the road this season, App State's Tyler Tuthill was named the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.

Tuthill struck out 11 batters for the second straight week and handled the bottom of the ninth in a one-run game to finish off a 2-1 victory at Little Rock on Friday. By allowing just the one run on four hits and walking just one batter, his analytic-based "Game Score" of 85 led all Sun Belt pitchers and ranked as the sixth-best Division I pitching performance from this past weekend.

Tuthill retired 14 of the first 15 batters and 12 of the final 13 in the second complete-game win of his career and the program's first nine-inning, complete-game victory on the road since Seth Grant's five-hit shutout at Elon in 2012.

With Tuthill going the distance Friday, six App State pitchers allowed a combined five runs in the series win at Little Rock.

Tuthill has allowed two earned runs or less in six of his last eight starts, and in his last three starts, he's totaled 22.2 innings, 25 strikeouts and three earned runs allowed. After pitching 6.2 no-hit innings against ULM and setting a career high with 11 strikeouts at Miami, he matched that strikeout number against Little Rock.

Tuthill has a 3.09 ERA this season, and his ERA of 1.83 in league play ranks No. 3 in the Sun Belt. In league games, he's also No. 3 in opposing batting average (.162) and No. 5 in fewest hits allowed (21).
