Baseball Closes Midweek Schedule at South Carolina

BOONE, N.C. — Possessing the sixth-best league record in the 12-team Sun Belt, App State's midweek finale occurs Tuesday, two days before the regular season closes with a conference home series in Boone.

The Mountaineers (18-28, 9-9) will travel to Founders Park to face No. 21 South Carolina (31-18, 15-12 SEC) at 7 p.m. The game will be available on SEC Network Plus.

South Carolina is on App State's schedule for the eighth straight season — the abbreviated 2020 season ended before they could meet in Charlotte on March 31, and rain canceled the 2018 game also scheduled to be played in Charlotte. Following South Carolina's 3-1 home win in 2019, it has a 15-1 lead in a series dating back to 1972, with App State's lone win being a 15-8 road victory in 1989.

This will be App State's 11th game against a team that's either in a Power Five league (seven games against ACC programs NC State, Wake Forest and Miami) or a top-15 staple (three games at ECU). The Mountaineers are 1-17 vs. top-100 RPI teams this year and 17-11 vs. teams outside the top 100.

App State allowed a combined five runs over three games in a weekend series win at Little Rock. Tyler Tuthill threw a complete game Friday in a 2-1 win, South Carolina transfer Trey Tujetsch pitched six scoreless innings in a 5-0 shutout Sunday and Shane Roberts, another South Carolina transfer, pitched a scoreless inning during a 4-2 loss Saturday.

Hard-throwing freshman Ben Peterson is set for his fourth midweek start after making consecutive March starts against North Carolina A&T (win with two scoreless innings on a staff day), Charlotte and Wake Forest. He pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen last Tuesday against ETSU.

South Carolina is coming off a three-game sweep at Kentucky. The Gamecocks' starter is scheduled to be right-hander C.J. Weins, who has a 3.38 ERA in 5.1 innings over four appearances (one start) this season.
