MOBILE, Ala. – App State men's track & field finished eighth of 10 teams at the Sun Belt Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Mountaineers finished with 41 points on the weekend. Arkansas State claimed the team title with 164 points, South Alabama finished second with 132 points and Texas State was third with 123 points.
Nathan Karl earned All-Sun Belt honors in the shot put with a third-place finish. Karl bettered his PR on three separate throws finishing with a mark of 53-3.00 (16.23m).
App State had a solid showing in the 400-meter hurdles.
Dylan Blankenship turned in a PR time of 53.42 seconds to place fourth for his first top eight individual finish at the Sun Belt Championships. In his first Sun Belt Championship,
Jabari Dalton finished right behind in fifth place with a time of 54.46 seconds.
The 4x400-meter relay tandem of
Cole Krehnbrink,
Thomas Dixon Jr., Blankenship and Dalton won their heat and placed fourth overall in 3:16.12.
In the triple jump,
Eric Haddock Jr. recorded a fifth-place finish on his final leap, covering 48-7.50 (14.82m).
Tyler Lewis earned his first top eight finish in a conference meet, placing eighth with a mark of 47-3.00 (14.40m).
Chrystian Smith and Karl both recorded top eight finishes in the discus. Smith covered 159-5 (48.60m) on his first throw to finish seventh. Karl moved seventh with his fifth toss and then sixth with his final toss, covering a distance of 162-4 (49.49m).
Jabari Johnson turned in a season-best time of 10.55 seconds to place sixth in the 100-meter dash. Johnson now has finished in the top eight in the 100-meter dash twice in his career, taking eighth in 2019.
App State saw two place in the top eight of the 10,000-meter run.
Isaac Benz recorded his second top eight finish at the Sun Belt Championships, crossing sixth in 31:05.09. Benz also placed sixth in the event at the 2019 championships.
Ben Cignarale shattered his PR in the event by over 20 seconds, placing eighth in 31:20.91.
Patrick Freeman recorded a PR in the pole vault, placing seventh in the event with a mark of 15-11.25 (4.86m).
Calbert Guest also scored points for App State in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The freshman finished seventh overall in a PR time of 9:23.72 for two points.
App State will now await word on qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, which takes place from May 26 to May 29 in Jacksonville, Fla.
