Terrell on Watch List for National Two-Way Player of the Year Award

BOONE, N.C. — App State's Andrew Terrell is one of 17 players nationally and the lone Sun Belt Conference player to be named to the watch list for the John Olerud Award Two-Way Player of the Year Award.

Presented by the College Baseball Foundation, the award is named for the former Washington State standout who achieved success both as a first baseman and left-handed pitcher during the late 1980s and was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. He later became a standout for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Through 24 games this season, Terrell has made multiple starts at six positions: designated hitter, left field, center field, right field, third base and pitcher. He's reached base 30 times, posted 15 hits, scored 12 runs and stolen five bases offensively while also recording 11 strikeouts and a 1-1 record in 4.1 innings spread over four mound appearances.

A junior from Franklin, N.C., Terrell started at DH on Tuesday night, later struck out four batters in 1.2 scoreless innings and then finished the game as App State's right fielder.

"Andrew's versatility is huge for our team," App State head coach Kermit Smith said. "I think the thing that is overlooked a lot of times is how hard it is to be a two-way player, then throw on top of that the fact that he plays the infield and outfield. It's a huge time commitment to try and balance being good at all of those areas."

Last month, Terrell was named the John Olerud Award Two-Way Player of the Week following a four-game run in which he started at three positions.

Batting from the leadoff spot when he was the starting pitcher against North Carolina A&T, he struck out five of the seven batters he faced in two scoreless innings on a "staff day" and then scored four times and stole two bases in App State's victory.

"By not having a full season last year, the talent pool for the John Olerud Award has brought about only a few familiar names with a tremendous influx of new talent," said George Watson, chairman of the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year selection committee. "What we're also finding out is that, with the expanded rosters in college baseball, the talent pool is so thick that many coaches who relied on two-way players in the past are not having to do so. So the players on this year's list are truly some of the top athletes in college baseball and are making tremendous impacts both on the mound, at the plate and in the field."
